This story keeps getting more interesting, there are definitely secrets happening. Dangerous secrets. I really like the way you're examining Michelle's inner conflict and I'm starting to wonder which end of the whip she will end up on.

I loved the way you worked the back story in the plot. I kind of wonder during Three Sister why there only female slave.

The war was a great reason.

I love how you are building out the world and thinking things through, and the emphasis on Michelles - and now Lena's psychology. Favorite sections included her training in front of the mirror and the way her mother nearly catches her! Maybe someday soon her mother or father will (gulp!) I also liked the spiel and the bureaucratic nature of HCI, which combines the best of a Barbary Pirate slave market and the DMV. :-) Excellent writing and character development, and only good things to say. Thank you for sharing this. :-)

I am rooting for Lena to be the one who becomes enslaved. She is such a high and mighty elitist spoiled brat who revels in witnessing other women's suffering. I would love to see her put in her place. And what poetic justice it would be, to have her processed by Michelle and Sandy.

Unfortunately I'm going to disappoint you: Lena will not end up in a collar in this story. She is far too wealthy, and her family too powerful, for that to happen.

But I am seriously thinking about a story with Lena going to Italy and being kidnapped by North African slavers, so watch this space!

I'm enjoying your story very much but I had to take a break to comment on part of it. Your story goes that a bio weapon caused the birth rate of males to females to drop to one in four. One male to three or four females. However the natural ratio is in fact 6.5 females to each male among humans. In modern western societies, birth control, abortion, and test that can reveal an unborn fetus's gender almost emeadiatly, has reduced the the ratio to two females for every male. If we lived in a more stone age to a Victorian age society we would also have this ratio. In fact this was the USA's ratio in the 1970 census.

Just thought I'd mention it.

For what it's worth, I was inspired by this book: "Singled Out: How Two Million Women Survived Without Men After the First World War" that talked about the impact the sudden subtraction of a huge portion of the male population had on Great Britain, and I wondered how our world - especially the US - would react in a similar situation. So I was aiming for a huge reduction that might never be remedied, but it turns out that I wasn't as drastic as I could have (realistically) been! This has been interesting food for thought, so thanks again for commenting.

I didn't realize there are other stories by other authors in Joe Doe's imaginative legal slavery world. I'm really enjoying this one - I like smart and likable female characters - and love the mystery about what will happen to whom. I'm planning to write my own story in this universe so this is great research too. :)

I find no evidence for the 6.5:1 ratio in any historical society. The largest imbalance in modern times is a 4:1 ratio in postwar Paraguay in the 1870s after a loss more brutal than any nation experienced since the 1600s.

Where imbalances exist, there are a surplus of males, but not a huge imbalance. This would be in societies that practiced selective female infanticide.

Of course, in ancient polygamous societies, there would be a surplus of females that successfully reproduced, since some males would have large harems with children by multiples wives and concubines, with other men resorting to brothels where postnatal abortion was common or reduced to slavery themselves. Think of ancient societies and medieval Islamic societies where the sultan may have hundreds of wives, guarded by non-reproducing eunuchs. I've seen ratios as high as 17:1 in favor of females there. But that is a measure of reproducing females to reproducing males, not total females to total males.

In this story, a 4:1 ratio would have a significant impact on the practice of slavery. Without polygamy and with sexual slavery, more than 4 times as many females as males would be enslaved, even given a rate of judicial slavery 10 times higher for males. That's because perhaps only 1% of males would be sentenced to judicial enslavement, and 0.1% of females. Statistically, the highest percentage of judicially enslaved females would be women already serving a term of indentured servitude who managed to commit a serious crime despite that status. For most women, serving a short (<5 years) term of sexual servitude would be a rite of passage, common in lower classes and for women in civil bankruptcy. A female judicial slave might as well have a facial brand, that's how ignominious such a sentence would be and how much it would mark her for life.

A 4:1 ratio easily explains nearly everything you see in this story, and how one of the largest (if not THE largest) auction and transshipment center in the entire US nearly exclusively handles females.
