Surgery Day Pre Op

We sit,
she and I
next to you
beside you
behind you
We are both
touching you
She with
the absent-minded habit
of having been with someone
for 30 years
Me with intention
and care
and love
She pats your arm,
rests her hand on your leg,
on your shoulder
I play with your hair
rub your neck
stroke your arm
squeeze your shoulders
stand beside you
lean your head against my chest
kiss your forehead
At one point,
I sit on the arm of your chair
and she jumps out of her chair
beside you
and snaps at me to
just sit down
I say no, it's ok.
You should sit next to him.
And she says
I would rather you just sit
than practically lay in his lap
And I'm thinking
he's about to have his body
cut into pieces
and sewn back together
and you are worried
that I am sitting too close to him?
But I move
When they call your name
you put your arms out
to both of us
and we group hug
Then they say
only one of us
can come with you
and of course she goes
And I sit
alone
in a waiting room
knowing that
she will get
the last hug
the last kiss
and hoping
that you wish
it was me
Waiting is hard
Almost as hard as
loving you
while you are married
to her
