.....
Emily had just finished her main entrée for the potluck party she was having. She wanted to try something new, so she found a great recipe for braised duck legs with spaetzle and mushroom ragout. Her friends said she didn't have to go overboard with anything, but as a professional chef, it didn't feel right for her to try to make anything less extravagant. She thought about making more entrées, but resisted; the last time she did that for a potluck dinner, they had way too much food leftover. So, she decided to keep it at one dish, and the others will bring their own thing.
She did this at least a few times a year as a way to bring some of her old college friends together. When they were younger, they had plenty of time to hang out with each other; now that they were all in their thirties, they mostly kept in touch through text groups. They all had either family, careers, or something else going on that made them too busy to hang out all the time. Emily did these dinners as a way for everyone to stay together through their busy lives.
The first guests to show up were her sister, Janice, and her boyfriend, Mark. Janice brought a simple pasta dish, but her main items were a couple of desserts she made, pistachio tiramisu and trifle cheesecake, and she made enough of it in case anyone wanted seconds. While Emily was the chef of the family, Janice was the dessert expert.
The next guests were one of her married friends, Lori and George, who brought a fancy salmon dish that got Emily very excited to hear about the recipe. The next couple to arrive was Dennis and Susan, who were vegetarians. They brought the Caesar salad that was for everyone and sesame tofu and broccoli dish that only they were going to eat.
They were in the dining room helping Emily get the table ready for their dinner party and having the typical conversations when the subject of Harry had come up. He was the only person who hadn't shown up yet, which was unusual for him since he's usually the one that shows up first to anything.
"Where is our old buddy, Haruto?" Janice asked.
Harry was born Haruto Takahashi; he was given the obvious nickname, Harry, when he was in elementary school and went mostly by that name ever since. His parents were from Kyoto, Japan, and came to America for work a few years before Harry was born.
"I'm sure Courtney is the reason he's late," said Dennis.
"Oh no, he's not back with her again, is he?" Emily asked.
"Of course, he is," said Susan. "They always get back together."
"Shit," said Emily, suddenly feeling very annoyed. "That means she's probably coming too."
For the last few years, Harry had a long-time, off-and-on-again relationship with a very terrible woman named Courtney who no one else could stand. She was obnoxious, rude, narcissistic, and just downright unpleasant. Nobody can understand why Harry would keep going back to a woman like her, but everyone is sure sex has a major role in why it keeps happening. She was a knockout, so no one could really blame Harry or anyone else for falling for her, but no one could understand why anyone would want to stay in a relationship with her for too long.
This wasn't even the first time Harry went after a woman like Courtney. He seems to be very attracted to gorgeous, yet problematic women. Nobody can reason why he would fall for these kinds of women; one theory a few of them came up with was that he enjoys the drama of it all. Either way, it was one of the reasons Emily stopped putting herself out there to get Harry's attention. Besides coming to the conclusion, she wasn't his type she wasn't sure if she wanted to be with a man who has these kinds of issues with women.
When Harry and Courtney broke up for what seemed like the last time six months ago, and it seemed to stick this time, there was a sense of relief among all of his friends. But now, for some strange reason, he was back with her, and Emily was sure this would create a problem for her dinner party.
"This is your fault," Janice said to Emily. "You should've made a play for him when you had the chance; then we wouldn't have to keep dealing with Courtney."
"Hey, I gave him every opportunity to come after me," Emily responded. "It's not my fault he wanted to keep me in the friendzone. Besides, that was in college; I'm long past that by now."
It was no secret among them that Emily used to have a crush on Harry back when they were all college freshmen. He was tall, handsome, very muscular, the star wide receiver of the football team, and an all-around good guy to hang out with. He was also incredibly smart, and Emily met him when they were in a study group for a chemistry class where he basically taught everyone their lessons better than their teacher ever could.
Harry was aware that Emily had a thing for him but never did anything about it. Something close did happen between them in the fall semester of their senior year during a raunchy frat party where they ended up getting a little wasted and making out with each other. They were actually close to having sex when they went to find a private room to finish what they started; Emily quickly got naked for Harry, and he had fun feeling up her tits. He got his shirt off and was about to take off his pants when a fire alarm went off. A fire broke out in the game room, and the fire department was immediately called in, so they had to quickly get dressed and leave the frat house. Thankfully, the fire was contained in just that room, and nobody got hurt. But afterwards, it got awkward between them, and they just decided not to talk about it ever again.
She had given him plenty of chances to make it all those years ago, but after a while she just gave up on it ever happening. She decided that if he wasn't interested in her in a romantic way, then he didn't deserve to be with her. She was still happy with their friendship, and that was still important to her.
"What you should've done was slut it up a bit for him," said Lori.
"That's what he usually goes for," said George.
"But you were always a Charlotte when you could've been a Samantha," said Janice, who loved to make Sex and the City references whenever she could.
"Hey, Charlotte was hot," said Emily.
"I always preferred her to the others," said Dennis.
"Thank you," said Emily. "And I don't have to look trashy to get any guy; I'm cute as it is."
"But you could be hotter if you wanted to nab Harry," said her ever-loving sister.
Emily was a very attractive blonde woman who stood at about 5'5" with a slim body and a good pair of D-cup breasts, which she often kept hidden. She wasn't shy about her body; she loved to wear bikinis on the beach or a sexy dress when the occasion arose, but she never thought she should have to show off too much when she didn't need to. Right now, she was wearing a nice, short-sleeve, red and black floral dress that buttoned up from the front. It showed off half her legs and hugged her breasts on top to accentuate the size. She thought it was sexy, but not in an obvious way.
"Let it go, you guys," she said. "That was college; we're adults now, and if Harry wants to pretend that he's still a frat boy and go after every girl who dresses like a tramp, then that's on him."
"We're sorry, Emily," said Janice. "I guess the idea of us having to see Courtney again reminds us of how Harry could've done so much better."
"And it's not like Courtney has raised the bar on the women he could be dating," said George. "At this point, picking up any random street corner hooker seems a lot more preferable to Courtney."
Everyone had a good laugh.
"But still, let's all be on our best behavior tonight when she arrives," said Emily. "We may not like that she's coming, but we can't let anything she does or says ruin our night."
They all agreed and decided to change the subject by talking a little about what was going on currently in their lives. There were the typical talking points of people in their thirties: work issues, home projects, complaints about the Gen Z kids, and doing what they could to talk as little about politics as they could.
Harry eventually arrived with Courtney; they didn't have to ring the doorbell; everyone heard them arguing with each other as they were walking up from the driveway. Emily greeted them at the door; she and Harry hugged and kissed each other's cheek to greet each other, while Courtney gave Emily a weak handshake.
Courtney was a tall brunette who liked to put on high heels wherever she went, no matter what the occasion was. She wore a short black dress that showed an obscene amount of cleavage on top, and her left arm was covered in a tattoo sleeve that got bigger every time Emily saw her.
"I brought sukiyaki," said Harry.
"Oh, nice, I love that," Emily said very excitedly.
Harry had introduced her to several Japanese and other Asian cuisines that she had enjoyed making herself over the years.
"Well, you're not going to like this; it tastes like shit," said Courtney.
"You didn't taste it," Harry said to Courtney.
"I can just tell it does," she replied.
"Good to see you again, Courtney," said Emily.
"Yeah, you too," Courtney replied. "Nice dress. I guess it's... maybe cute."
Emily didn't say anything; she just put on a fake smile and said thank you before leading them to the dining room to meet everyone else. Harry shook hands and hugged everyone, while Courtney just waved at them. After talking for a bit, they all sat down and started filling their plates to begin their dinner.
The dinner began well, everyone just catching up with what's been going on in their lives, mostly family and work-related topics. The conversation turned a little to sports and how well their college football team was doing, which Harry mentioned he missed being on. Some stuff about politics did come up, but nobody let that topic get out of hand since they were a mix of both democrats and republicans in their little circle of friends.
Everyone complimented each other on the dishes they brought to the potluck, with big praise for Emily's duck legs. They even tried Dennis and Susan's vegetarian dish this time, and they were all surprised at how much they actually liked it. They each took turns explaining what went into making the meals they brought, and everyone took out their phones to type notes on the recipes.
The only person who didn't seem to be having a good time was Courtney. She was mostly quiet throughout the dinner, but when she did speak, it was to make some kind of commentary on what was being said. It didn't matter how the topics of conversations were going; she always had some kind of criticism of what was being said. Everyone tried to be nice for Harry's sake, which wasn't easy, and they could tell he wasn't too happy with Courtney's behavior as well.
She even had something to say about all the dishes everyone brought to dinner. She said the pasta was too gooey, the salmon was too dry, the vegetarian meal tasted rotten, and the Caesar salad was too salty, which confused everyone because salt is never used to make Caesar salad. Everyone still tried to maintain some civility, no matter how offended they seemed to be.
Then Courtney tried the duck legs, and that's when things started turning for the worse.
"Ugh, I can't finish this," said Courtney about the duck legs. "It's way too dry; you overcooked it."
Nobody at the table agreed with her; they all commented that it was just perfect.
"Well, Harry thinks it sucks," said Courtney.
All eyes were now on Harry, who felt he had to say something.
"No, I think it's just fine," he replied.
"Ugh, of course you like it; you have bad taste in everything," she said, then turned her attention to Emily. "Seriously, you're supposed to be a chef; you should know better."
"Ok, that was inappropriate," said Harry.
"It's fine, Harry," said Emily. She was offended by what Courtey said but was hoping this wouldn't lead to an argument.
"No, it's not fine; these legs are perfect," said Harry. "In fact, everything on this table is perfect."
Courtney slammed her hands down on the table hard enough to shake everything to show her discontent.
"You never take my side in anything," Courtney yelled at him.
"Let's not let this get out of hand; we all are entitled to our own opinions," said Emily.
"You're just saying that because you want to fuck him!" Courtney yelled.
Everyone was in shock to hear Courtney yell that out of the blue.
"That's uncalled for," said Harry, trying to come to Emily's defense.
"You're saying that because you want to fuck her also!"
Emily was in too much shock to say anything, but everyone was muttering something about what was going on.
Harry asked Courtney to follow him to the living room so they could speak in private. As soon as they left, the remaining dinner guests stayed quiet so they could try to hear what they were saying, but it was hard to make out their conversation.
"Anybody have a clue what they're saying?" Mark asked.
"I can make out a few swear words, but nothing else," said George.
"Me too," said Susan. "The one time she's not yelling when we want to hear anything."
"I'm really hoping this would cause her to leave," said Emily.
"And be the final nail in the coffin of their fucked-up relationship," said Janice.
They all agreed that they hoped this would somehow lead to them never seeing Courtney again.
There was a moment of quiet from the living room before Harry came back to the dining room.
"I'm sorry, everyone," said Harry as he took his seat. "Courtney is leaving, so we don't have to deal with her anymore... or ever."
Everyone took a sigh of relief when they heard him say that.
"Are you ok?" Emily asked.
"It's fine," said Harry. "I'm sorry about what just happened, everyone; I should not have brought her here."
Everyone said it was just fine and showed some sympathy towards Harry, even though they were giving each other looks of joy when he wasn't looking.
"At least she's gone," said Emily.
"Not quite," said Lori. "I see she forgot her purse--"
Courtney stormed into the dining room wearing the coat she came into Emily's house with. She was getting her coat and was on her way out the door when she realized she had forgotten her purse in the dining room hanging on the chair she was sitting on and had to come back for it.
"Fuck all of you," said Courtney as she grabbed her purse and then turned to Emily. "Have fun fucking his small Asian dick; maybe you could enjoy it better than I ever could."
"Ok, that's not necessary," said Harry.
"What? You don't want everyone to know about the shrimp cocktail you got down there?"
"Please stop; you're embarrassing yourself."
"Hey, it's not my fault you are proof that some stereotypes are based on truth," she said as she used her pinky finger as a gesture of how small Harry's dick is.
Everyone was quiet and in awe of how this conversation was going. Of course, everyone heard about the small dick stereotype of Asian men, but it was a racist stereotype that nobody took seriously. It was never even talked about among them all until now.
"Please leave," Emily finally said.
Courtney didn't say anything else; she just left the room, and a moment later they all heard the door slam shut, and she was finally gone.
"Again, I'm sorry about all of this," said Harry.
"No problem," said George. "And don't worry, we don't care about... well, you know."
"You know what?" Harry asked.
"About what she said about your... you know," said Lori. "I'm sure it's fine."
Everyone was giving Harry unusual looks as this conversation kept going.
"Wait, you guys aren't taking what she said seriously, are you?"
"It's just that we know about how... well... some Asian men..." Dennis didn't know how to finish his sentence without it sounding too offensive.
"Oh, you all have got to be kidding me," said Harry, who was looking very offended by now.
"It's no big deal," said Janice. "I've been with a couple of men with small dicks before, and they've done... well, I guess they've done alright."
That comment only made things sound worse for Harry.
"I can't believe you all," said Harry. "For the last few years, you guys have been telling me what a crazy bitch Courtney is, and now you take what she has to say seriously?"
"It's fine," said Mark. "It's no big deal."
"Yes, like they say, it's not the size that matter--" Susan began to say.
"Not according to Janice," said Dennis.
Everyone had a little laugh at that, not realizing how it hurt Harry a lot more this way.
"I can't believe you guys," said Harry, feeling very offended. "This is some... this is..."
He wanted to say this sounded very racist towards him but couldn't bring himself to say it. He had never had a problem like this from his friends concerning his Asian heritage before, and now they were insulting his heritage but his manhood as well.
"Please, guys, let's stop this conversation," said Emily, who was trying her best to come to Harry's defense.
"We're just trying to make him feel better," said Susan.
"I'm not feeling better about this," said Harry, feeling very angry at his so-called friends right now.
"We're just letting you know that having a small dick--"
"Please stop," Harry pleaded.
"Yes, stop this now," said Emily. "This is not an appropriate topic of conversation."
"We're just letting him know, having a small dick is no big deal," said Mark.
"He doesn't have a small dick," Emily said angrily.
"How would you know?" Janice asked.
"Because we fucked back in college, that's how I know!" Emily said out loud.
Everyone was taken by surprise by Emily's surprise revelation, including Harry, who had no idea where this was going since he and Emily never had sex.
"Is this true?" Dennis asked Harry.
"Well, um..." Harry didn't know what to say.
"It's alright, Harry, it was years ago; we can tell them now," said Emily. "It was back at our last semester in college; we were at a frat party, and one thing led to another, and we hooked up, and then we kind of made a weekend out of it. But afterwards, we realized we were better off as friends, so we broke it off."
"Seriously? And you never told me about this?" said Janice.
"Or me and Susan either," said Lori.
"You told us you two just made out with each other one time and nothing else," said Susan.
"We did make out once a semester earlier, but then we had our fling later on."
Harry was both scared and impressed by how much lying Emily was doing just to protect him. He just stayed quiet and let her do all the talking since it was going so well for him.
"But why have you kept it from us all these years?" Janice asked. "Especially from me, your own sister?"
"I didn't want to say anything because for years you all have been making fun of me for a crush I used to have on him back in college, and the last thing I wanted was to give you all more ammunition to make fun of me with."
They all nodded their heads and agreed that is exactly what would have happened if they had found out.
"So, I got Harry to agree not to say anything about it. Isn't that right, Harry?"
It was now Harry's turn to go along with this ruse. He did his best to play it cool and not ruin what Emily was trying to do for him.
