That led him to receive which at the time was the most lucrative initial contract offered to a player fresh out of college. Of course, that contract had been topped many times since as a result of inflation. Nowadays some college coaches of major universities never mind professional coaches in the NFL, routinely earn seven million dollars annually; roughly the same price tag, the United States paid to Russia to acquire Alaska way back in 1867.

Now Larry's arrogance was an essential attribute to have to be a successful quarterback in the NFL. Indeed, he did have a sensational career ranked as one of the great ones. The absolute high point had to be the one Super Bowl victory, whereby he was named the MVP of the game and at the same time coincidently his wife Pamela Rose was the halftime entertainment show. That Super Bowl reached the zenith of the standard of measure to adjudge the ultimate hype of the most hyped sporting event in the United States. One can certainly understand Larry's arrogance given his sporting accomplishments and the adulation he received as a result therefrom.

However, such out of this world sensational success and the incidental arrogance was a death knell for Larry to expect a successful relationship with a worthwhile woman. Larry was not a stupid man, but he was the traditional alpha male and therefore ultra chauvinistic in his attitude towards women and their role in his life. Before he met and subsequently married Pamela, it did not occur to him that his love life was deficient, and he certainly did not feel despondent that he had never experienced even an ephemeral relationship with a woman. As far as he was concerned, he had no trouble in meeting and bedding all kinds of beautiful women. By definition in his mind, that therefore he had a successful love life with women.

Paradoxically comparing their marriage celebrated to those in the late nineteenth century and earlier, between parties of a higher social stratosphere in western society, one would discern more similarities than differences. The major difference in such deemed similarity, of course, was that Pamela was not a virginal bride as was the understood requirement of a bride in an old-fashioned aristocrat marriage.

By intellectual consideration that difference is not solely attributable to the undoubted lessening of the rigidity of moral standards via the passage of time. The material point is that during the nineteenth century and earlier, medical science had not yet advanced to such a degree of accuracy that the paternity of a child could be objectively determined. That being the case, and since it was absolutely necessary for the mores of the day, especially for inheritance purposes, that the issue of the couple must be legitimate, and therefore the bride had to be a virgin. After the marriage ceremony there were enough servants around to monitor the wife's activities to ensure with relative certainty the absence of adultery at least on the wife's part.

Now both in the case of the old-fashioned nineteenth and earlier centuries of aristocratic marriages vis-à-vis the modern marriage of Larry and Pamela, potential children were an important topic to consider while drafting a workable agreement for the marriage. In the old-fashioned marriage there was the concern that the heir to the estate must be of the couple and safeguards were as outlined in place to ensure such outcome. In the case of Larry and Pamela, whether Larry actually wanted to be father or not, it was surely a common sense proposition that he would desire that the children of the marriage would be his. In Pamela's case there was a more practical lucrative monetary incentive for her to become a mother, to advance her career. However, such advantages were for naught should her children not be of her legally married husband.

Given such reality the marriage agreement, designated as the pre-nuptial agreement between Larry and Pamela spelled out the penalty should there be a child not of the marriage. The pre-nuptial agreement compelled each of them to set aside a significant amount of their income onto a mutual beneficial trust fund. They were required to replenish the said fund annually. That fund would be forfeited to the non offending party should either become a blood parent to a child not of their marriage.

The major similarity between the marriage of Larry and Pamela to the old-fashioned arranged marriage was that romantic love was not a factor in the decision to marry. In old fashioned arranged marriages, the concern was what benefit the marriage brings to each other and their respective families. In Pamela's case, her mother Hannah was instrumental in pointing out to Pamela the necessity to marry in order to maintain her high profile as a celebrity in show business. Larry Grant on paper seemed to be an ideal choice. As for Larry, marrying a celebrity like Pamela Rose was a bonus which would indirectly but nevertheless tangibly enhance his fortunes at playing football.

Accordingly, their marriage was a success at least in the eyes of the general public considering their calculated motivations. Consequently, even though they lived separate and apart for the first twenty years of their marriage, still they remained married for the incidental career benefits each derived from their union. They did engage periodically in sex and produced two children fairly early in their marriage.
