Inner India
land of poetic spices,
artistic silks
and introspective gems
land of tear-drop palaces
living cities of old
monks, monkeys and elephants
and shining roads of gold
but I'll catch no train
and take no plane,
or if I do
it may not matter
may my voyaging be inward,
a journey of healing
an enterprise for enlightenment
for I think the chains that hinder me
are not of metal
but of philosophy and psyche
that the discoveries I need
(though earthly profits they could breed)
are to be found in inner,
not outer India
where the soul's fruits take seed
