A group of friends chat somewhat away from the main group of partiers in someone's living room. The host is a friend of a friend, but everyone else seems older. 'Headache?'

'No, I'm ...'

The appropriate description escapes her.

'I didn't mean ... where's your friend?'

'Went to find her boyfriend. And I need to find a ride home.'

'I have a car.'

Again, she pulls back.

'I'm not sure why I said that. I mean I do, but ... I'm acting weird.'

'I think you're very sweet. And if you're offering, you're a lifesaver. I'm grounded. I need to beat my parents home!'

'Let's go. I'm Summer.'

'I'm Autumn.'

Summer stares at her.

'No way!'

Autumn laughs.

'Okay, I'm Courtney. I'm acting weird, too. It must be your fault. I feel a little crazy. Do you have that effect on everyone?'

'Not that I know of.'

'Well, you inspire me to be ... spontaneous. How old are you?'

'18. I suppose you're in college?'

'Yes, I'm a junior. So, that's settled! Can we go now?'

'Sure.'

'Let's go this way,' Courtney says, leading her out the back door.

They go through a gate into the side yard, and walk out to the street where Courtney stops and turns back to her.

Summer looks into Courtney's eyes, and sees something she's wanted her entire life, but didn't know until that exact moment.

'Which way?'

'Oh. Sorry. I'm not used to ... this way.'

Courtney follows her to a Honda Civic.

'Boring, I know. It's my mom's.'

'Hey, if it'll get me home, it could be a Yugo.'

She opens the passenger door and slides in. She buckles up, then turns to face Summer.

Summer has trouble putting the key into the ignition.

'Relax,' says Courtney, putting her hand on Summer's. 'Nothing's going to happen. Unless you want it to.'

The key slides into the ignition, the engine turns over, catches. Summer looks straight ahead.

'Do you know Persimmon Tree Drive?'

'Yes.'

'I live on Elderberry Court, about halfway in.'

Summer puts the Honda in gear, pulls away from the curb. They ride in silence. Summer drives carefully, finding her way until Elderberry dead ends. She slows to a stop.

It was supposed to go through, but they went bankrupt before they built the rest of the houses.

Summer continues to look straight ahead.

'Why did you come into the kitchen?'

'I thought you ... I ... you ....'

Courtney unbuckles, reaches over and turns off the ignition. She cups Summer's chin, turns it toward her and kisses her, then backs away to appraise.

'You thought Manda and I were fucking, didn't you.'

Summer says nothing.

'Well, you were right. We were.'

She leans in for another kiss. Summer doesn't resist.

Courtney reaches under her top, pushes it up, tries to slip inside her bra, but it's very tight.

Courtney pulls out her hand, smears Summer's come on her own lips and they kiss one last time, Summer savoring her sweetness.

'If you ever want to return the favor,' Courtney says, producing a sharpie out of thin air and writing her number on Summer's hand. 'My folks go out a lot.'

Courtney gets out, walks back to the last house and goes inside, leaving Summer bereft but happily satisfied?

She is still smiling when she takes a picture of her hand with her phone, then she washes it off. Then she takes a picture of her smiling face, and texts it to Courtney. And she's still smiling as she drifts off to sleep.
