I think this is nearer to real life that many who will comment would like to admit. So many stories are black and white and make no reference to the relationship built up over years. In this story the biggest disappointment is the behaviour of his best friend. I think this is a huge betrayal. They were best friends since childhood. How could he do that to his friend? 4 stars.
Long term, though, he can never trust her. She solved her depression problem by fucking around. And life will deal her more reasons o get depressed. D

I liked it. Very good story. I know of couples who have been through similar and some have survived, some didn't. Despite what we write or read, life is never that simple. 5 stars from me.
When the affair was discovered Kate took all the blame for initiating the physical contact with Matt. That may be true but, it really seems to me that Matt is mostly to blame and not just because he was Jim's best friend and shouldn't have gone there.
As Jim's business partner Matt knew how busy they were and the amount of hours Jim was working. Why would he go to their house when he knew Kate would be home alone? When Kate was venting her loneliness and depression over the amount of hours Jim was working why would Matt say he wasn't working long hours and because of the employees they had he didn't know why Jim was working so much? Why would he hint around that maybe Jim wasn't really working so much and was instead out running around on Kate?
The only logical reason for Matt's actions and words is to get exactly the result he got. To get into Kate's panties.

I am enormously divided with this story configuration.
So no it's not a RAAC but it doesn't totally inspire me to make up.
It's not reconciliation, it's therapy.
It's not a husband, it's a nurse or a social worker.
That's where the term reconciliation bothers me, it sounds more like an obligation, an assumption of responsibility and guilt towards her child.
Certainly not a return to a couple. What is the long term future?
Well done! Like many others that read the loving wives stories I am not a fan of reconciliation unless it is earned. Here, I'm not sure it was earned - but his humanity realized that he could accept the platonic relationship (friendly, maybe barely so) until the 'real man' realized it fell short of what he is needed for. You handled that delicately enough I don't anticipate the deluge of "1*" demands that usually follow any reconciliation but even I felt 'his need' to truly be the man in his son's life!
Excellent writing! There is a huge dose of reality in this story. A depressed wife can behave that way. A wounded husband will behave that way. Reconciliation is possible, but the effort to work through the pain is extraordinary. That is very well done and all too believeable!
Good one. I was once in a similar situation as Matt, except I was married. I declined the advances of my friend's wife and blackmailed her into getting help. With proper care, she recovered and they went on to have a happy marriage. I was very tempted by her offer, but I think my self-control that day saved two marriages.
Ah yes. A man getting back into a relationship with a woman he has no trust, respect and very little love for because they had a kid together. Who would have guessed. Nothing like another story of a guy getting manipulated into taking his dumb ex back. Yawn
Reading this story was knowing the impending sense of doom was coming and Jim would eventually wind up with the cheating whore despite his very clear desire not to be. I hate stories like this.
ThePlunger is getting progressively better with each submission this one is no exception.
Engaging story developed and unfolded at a pace that allowed (invited?) the reader think and speculate how he (or she) might respond in a similar situation. Just one "For Instance:" 'Could I be that angry and maintain such a high level for that long?'
That, and several other emotional keys are available for pondering.
That said, I thought your ending was too quick, bordering on unrealistically abrupt. To go from the antagonist's short admission and confession in a bar to his short "threat" while getting undressed is a bit much -- IMHO.
What a chump. Plenty of kids grow up in single parent families. He doesn't need to share a house with her. Well-written, but you completely sold out your MC.

as part of the divorce Jim should have demanded Kate go back to her maiden name. That would have helped drive home the point he was throwing go with her. Once the divorce was final the should have blocked Katie and her parents’ numbers so he didn’t have to hear from any of them. Since he was dumb enough to answer when her father called to say she was in the hospital, he should have said “she is no longer my problem, call her lover Matt.”
Instead of meeting with any of the after the child was born, the main character Jim should have had the DNA test and once it was confirmed the child was his and paying off his debt, he could have easily used any money left over from the sale of the business to start a trust fund managed by his lawyer for the child and left town. He was willing to pay financial support and set up a trust fund for the kid anyway so it would have made more sense to do just what he planned leave town and start over.
How did Jim’s parents just disappear from the story? They signed to guarantee his business loan and one of the reasons for not defaulting on the loan was not hurting his parents. In fact if he had sued for custody of the child on the grounds Katie was an unfit mother, he would not have been without help as they were still alive.
Should have stuck with the BTB. Her responses were right out of the cheater's handbook. Fucking his best friend on top of that seals the deal. Had she fucked her lawyer instead, maybe it would have worked. He knew about that problem and did nothing. But a best friend - " Never " !
This writer is JimmthePlunger is skilled enough to put a conundrum on readers who are ready to burn the wife. MC is put in a rock and a hard place, trying to get rid of a cheating wife but got baby-trapped. And yes the situation is quite plausible in real life. And to makes things worse, the writer made Kate a clingy, desperate woman who wants her back-up man. She, because of her selfishness and stupidity, nearly destroyed the lives of her parents, Jim and the baby -- and after doing that she still wants to eat the cake which was Jim. Because she only thinks of herself -- actually in the end, she was the winner -- all others, Jim, her parents, the baby even Matt got burned instead of her.
Great story. It’s what sometimes happens in life and the hard decisions required.

The author's snarky, and at times passive-aggressive, attitude and comments toward his readers create an unpleasant and unnecessarily antagonistic backdrop for his submissions. If he feels the need for emotional support or an opportunity to vent, numerous types of effective psychotherapy are available. He would do well, however, to eliminate his prefaces and postscripts, at least to the extent they serve as venues in which to whine.
Thank you. I am enjoying your writing. But this story just highlights how stupid some people can be. Yes, you were correct when you said they weren't very "bright", as in intelligence. Once the divorce had gone through, Jim should immediately have started "dating" or simply hooking up. All that brooding and being celebate for a youngish man is ridiculous. Instead, he lets his ex-slut wife control him via her starving herself then getting them to live together. Not to mention her getting pregnant in the first place, in spite of the two of you discussing it and agreeing NOT to have a child at that time. So, she just ignores that and messes with her birth control! She was getting exactly what SHE wanted.
Nope, ridiculous. She committed the second worst betrayal a wife could in a Loving Wives story (first would be fucking a brother/father). He should have petitioned the court for custody of his son citing that she is unwell, tried to starve herself to death while pregnant, and continued to relapse. He could have received primary custody and stayed away from her.
What happens the next time she is really depressed and can't feel happy about life with her husband and son? Does she go fuck someone else? What guarantees does he have that this won't happen again?
Good story. But my main concern was the hate Jim carried around in his mind. That’s not healthy for anyone. You can divorce without all the animosity.
Narrative was a little rough early on but smoothed out as the story progressed. Good plot progression and I could feel his pain conflicting with a sense of duty for his son. Maybe I'm old fashioned, but if you bring a child into this world, you do what you have to do to make the family work. 5*

Really good story. I also know many couples who reconciled after affairs., and some that didn’t reconcile. It’s easy for a bunch of commenters to want scorched earth . Everyone deals with situations differently when it’s them actually involved. Everyone THINKS they would run into a burning house fire to save someone until they’re standing on the sidewalk looking at the blaze. Well done including the preface and prologue Keep it up.
Let me preface my comments by saying that I do not like very many reconciliation stories, and I truly hate RAAC stories. No, I do not consider them both the same. Like most things involving human psychology, there are multitude places along a broad spectrum between Nuclear Armageddon and Unequivocal Capitulation.
I think BTB is most peoples' default, because we have all felt powerless in the face of trauma. We can look back and dream of all the things we should've said or done that would have soothed our pain.
Reconciliation happened in this story, but I truly feel that all guilty parties suffered for their actions.
A good story, felt realistic and characters flawed but not irredeemably so. Sometimes relationships end up just being OK, not a fairytale.
Decent story. I kind of started hating Jim, bc he really was an immature ass. Not for divorcing Kate but the way he did it, he was a manchild. It was obvious Kate had bern depressed and while he had the business to worry over, he worried more about that than her, he let her stew instead of helping her..Matt on the other hand is scum,he literally put into her mind that he was cheating ..agree Kate is dumb, like Matt is in the dark about the jobs Jim is doing? Really? Matt would see the invoices? Matt manipulated her, he took advantage of her.
Not saying Jim is in the wrong with divorcing her, but there were enough conditions where he should have realized the contributing factors to her cheating including Matt's treachery.
But Jim finally grows up. He realizes Kate has shown how much she loves him and that depth caused her almost to do the unthinkable ,kill herself and the baby. Ironically it is Matt who makes him realize about himself. This isn't RAAC, it is a true reconciliation based on both ppl realizing the error of the original& building a new one. Jim is being an adult with a heart, Katy having shown her love for him.
None of the characters in this story felt real. The dialogue all felt melodramatic, as if it was from a soap opera. The y spoke in monologues and none of it felt natural.
I had to dip out when literal sickness caused reconciliation. This reads like the most toxic relationship I've ever seen. I dunno who you're talking about or seen IRL, but that's a ticking time bomb.
That this would be a reconciliation was telegraphed but that’s OK. But the last two paragraphs were way too rushed. If Kate was in bed crying, she wouldn’t have been wet at all, but he got inside, balls deep? And he was still angry enough to say he’d kill his EX-wife if she ever screwed someone else again?

There is also the problem of rage. It’s common in LW, but rage just can’t be maintained for that long. People stay divorced not due to rage, but indifference.
And I know 5 couples who tried to make it work after affairs.
3 of them ended in divorce within 3 years. Talking to them after the divorce? All 3 said their time together after the affair was awful. Therapy and counseling helped a little, but it was pretty much try and stay together for the kids. Things were miserable and didn't get better...until they decided to just end it with the divorce.
The other 2 that I know are still together. But both of them are only in it for the kids and as soon as kids graduate high school they'll be divorced. Hell with one of them...my buddy tells me they live in separate bedrooms. His is in the basement. And he has a girlfriend on the side. His wife was the cheater...so he developed a relationship with woman who works at the same company he does. He's got less than 2 years left with kids and he'll file the divorce. And then he's planning on moving in with the girlfriend.
Cheating like described here? Relationships are NEVER the same. Not a one time drunken mistake. This is planned and calculated betrayal from 2 people he trusts more than anyone else.

I'm surprised plunger doesn't have his MC focused on how much bigger Matt's cock is than he is. Surprised he doesn't spend a half a page in detailed descriptions of their cocks. Surprised he doesn't write the MC as a more willing cuckold...slurping creampies. And happily getting sloppy seconds. I thought that's what the plunger prefers in his stories?
I enjoyed the story very much. I agree with miket0422 as to where most of the blame lay. I can easily see a situation in which a husband could reconcile at some level with his wife, but what Matt did is beyond any reconciliation. I understand Jim’s feelings in the aftermath of his discovery. I’m sure that I’d feel the same way. However, I admire the man that he is and his “manning-up” for the sake of the people that were important to him ( James, James Jr, and to a lesser extent Kate.). I believe that this could be a very likely real world outcome in this situation. Well done!
Nice character development. You really felt for the in-laws and the flaws in the cheaters, that always put others in a bad place. I don't see a relationship, where the husband was forced to make big concessions because of the actions of other's, would have a chance, but like the author said, it's his story.
Lost interest when you contrived the lazy "pregnancy in the hospital" routine. Boring and not worth reading.

Big deal, the wife sucked the balls of her husband's best friend... Why get divorced right away? Perhaps she didn't even give Matt a blowjob, in the well-known sense, only caressed the testicles. Besides, not to say that the husband himself did not like it... Matt, in a way, even helped diversify the couple's sex life and brought Kate out of depression with his "magic balls". The pure and correct help of a best friend in a liberal sense... We need to take a broader and friendlier look at such things, and not react to such nuances as fucking hardened conservatives!
A pretty good story, but I could have done without Jim repeatedly bemoaning how horrible he was for having self respect and reasonable expectations of his wife and friend. You could have had them reconcile over the child without the bullshit.
Divorces are not granted in the US when there is an ongoing pregnancy. Once I read that she was pregnant and failed to mention it during the divorce, I stopped reading.
Oh I was betrayed like this once. He was someone I considered a brother. He's been smart and made himself scarce after it happened.
This is a rage so intense you feel as if you possess two minds. One belongs to a 400 pound silverback gorilla on a murderous rampage and doesn't care who gets in the way. The other mind belongs to the unfortunate sucker that got stuck with making sure the gorilla doesn't go on that rampage. That guy does everything he can think of to prevent the gorilla escaping. Jingle keys in front of the gorilla, sing the gorillas favorite song, beg people to be quiet around it, anything he can think of. That guy is so acutely aware that if that gorilla got out then he's the first the gorilla will kill.
The instant his former friend said "Come on man, get over it..." that gorilla would not longer be contained. I mean Thanos may as well have been there and snapped that lock out of existence. What does the husband have in his hands at the time? Well it doesn't actually matter because whatever it is it's now a weapon. If it serves as a decent weapon then he will continue to use it. If not then whatever is the next closest thing will be used but not after giving what's in his hands a fair shot. His former friend will be put onto his back, jaw forced open and broken if needed, and he will shove his hand down that mans throat as far as he can while he mockingly screams at the man. This gorilla thinks about this often and how he wishes it would be possible to have his former friends family to watch him treat their loved one's body like it's an cheap disposable object.. The gorilla sometimes wonders if the mans loved ones would be aware that he is stripping whatever remaining potential this man has but every time comes to the conclusion that they wouldn't. They would only be thinking about how defenseless and incompetent their loved one is to succumb to a crazy gorilla trying to kill him. This isn't a macho alpha male thing because he will fully expect to be killed and has no intention of stopping. In fact the gorilla at this point hopes to himself this will happen so he doesn't need to do his job of being a crazy gorilla all the time. The damage will be extensive and permanent. The gorilla intends for this day to change that mans entire life. He will split his life as pre gorilla and post gorilla. People no doubt will talk on end how wrong the gorilla was and how he doesn't deserve this. But the fact will always remain that it did happen to him and will need to live with it forever. The everyone that ever knew him will never see him as before but rather someone that needs pity.
Sound bad? Hell yeah it does. That's why we keep steady watch and make sure we try to redirect anger. But if the enemy is essentially taunting you then you have to just give up and understand the gorilla is getting what it wants.
Sooooo yeah I don't buy that interaction. And I don't see how former friend doesn't have shards of broken table ware embedded in his neck after doubling down yet again when he states to his friend
"But Jim, she loves only you, If you weren't such a hard ass you have a woman who knows she fucked up but will never do it again."
And about that last line. Pet peeve of mine, Love doesn't matter. A husband can love his wife more than anything but if he has issues that makes him say and do things that make her feel worthless then it's very reasonable for his wife to dump him . Also love didn't matter to her. On their wedding she would have never done it at all in the first place correct? Yet here he is. How do we know she won't do this again? Even though this is a story in a category dealing with cheating wives there was less of a chance of her being the person to cheat at the beginning of the story than her chances of future cheating now that she's cheated.
Love literally doesn't matter. What matters is that you have to trust them and they respect you. Go ask someone in a happy arranged marriage. Plenty exist. Love isn't the magical spell Disney lead the west to believe.
Life is complicated, full of curves. This story did a nice job with that. Appeared to be a simple btb story, but veered to more of a gray area with ex-wife’s pregnancy. Nice job.

Would have been better if Jim went out had dtarted dating other women after the divorce. Let Katie not only suffer the loss of being married to the man the claimed to love but also learn what it feels like to know thr person you claim to love is having sex with someone else. Katie is just another self centered, manipulative slut. Jim would have been better off having her declared an unfit mother and leaving town with his kid.
I liked it. I’ve written both reconciliation and burn stories, and I think I’ve of the things that makes LW great is how there’s always the tension as to what will happen next, which is not true in most categories on Lit. This is a solid reconciliation, and it deserves a good rating, just as much if not more than any BTB. Writing revenge is easy; writing broken people making their way back well is hard. But they can both be enjoyable.
I enjoyed it very much. Nothing really original but it developed consistently and believably. The only jarring note for me was the change of POV right at the end. WHY???
It dropped my appreciation from 5. But then, there aren't any fractions, and it's better than 4, so 5 it is.
I'm also influenced by the fact that we've been getting rather few stories of real quality of late (not just my opinion, look at the scores), so a current, competent writer should be encouraged.

I could only identify with James and Martha. The rest of the cast had few, if any, socially redeeming characteristics. I also think the story would be better served with a less abrupt ending. Still an enjoyable read
Good story, though the very abrupt ending didn't ring true. Maybe out of frustrated need,he would start having sex with her and the physical intimacy coupled with his love for their baby and the daily proximity of living together would soften him enough to try again with her. But his bitter refusalto reconcile seems inconsistent with the very abrupt reconciliation. That said, it is your story and it was well done so 5*****.
Reconciliation is good sometimes …. However, why in almost every single story you read about cheating wives the husband forgives and reconciled egress almost every single cheating husband tale involves the cheater being burned, taken to the cleaners and losing everything.
You use the old ‘man up’ line a lot I guess there’s no female equivilsnt to Man up.
As to this tale, when the wife was begging for forgiveness she begged also for Mat.. this shows age has feelings for him, whose to say flighty Matt and ‘fragile’ Kate don’t get together next time he’s ‘working too much’
She instigated it, Matt suffered the worst out of the cheaters, some would argue that but Kates punishment was self inflicted. All she needed was Matts cock to cure her depression last time and that doesn’t paint a good impression of that depression. Speaking from experience and all I know of it, Depression kills your libido so you’re less likely to be cured by a bit of strange cock or pussy if your depressions genuine. That second spell was purely manipulation to get what she wanted and it worked.
Now they have a kid he’s fucked if/when she does it again and he’s saddled with a woman with long term mental health issues and a tendency to cheat.
Bet those people you know who reconciled were all couples wher the wife cheated. You guys are fools, women know there’s better options out there

Why did Matt need to go bankrupt? Yes, he’s a dkeezeball who betrayed his best friend. That’s the shits, only things worse are family betraying family or the wife betraying the husband. (Or vice versa)
Matt lost his best friend, got beat up a couple of times, lost his business partner, possibly will lose his business in the end.
The MC suffered with their betrayal, lost his business and her father nearly died.
Kate instigated this, Matt should have resisted, they broke it off twice but both times Kate begged Matt to see her again. She should take the majority of the blame, enough in 2023 of still treating women like children who need guiding by a parent figure to do the right thing.
In this age of strong empowered women on an equal to men let’s have them accept the same degrees of personal responsibility as men and stop all this victim,, seduced, vulnerable bullshit.
They can build careers, raise families and compete in most fields …. They can also show bad judgement, be selfish and screw up

I can not imagine a lawyer allowing a partnership to be created without a 'right of first refusal' I have been involved with three different partnerships, all had a restriction which would have made this impossible. One can not just charge what ever you want, or take 'the highest bidder' generally there is an small business appraisal. Etc etc. Finally, his Facebook post was such that every divorce attorney I know would claim emotional and possibly physical abuse. It is filled with hate and invective. If I read that I would blame hubby 100% and assume Kate had gone to someone for emotional support. I honestly would wonder what evidence paranoid wacko hubby had that a affair had actually taken place. Since he has none, short of a full confession, which I would doubt given his temper, I would believe it was all in his head. Personally, if I were a friend of Kate I would have told her to stay away from him, he committed several acts of First Degree Assault (the only reason he was not in jail was his friend didn't put him there which was a terrible mistake on his part). There is just so much here that is plainly silly. I could not get past the first page then skipped to the last. I realize this is fiction, but this one is so much fiction I am surprised they did not ride to work on unicorns and use magic wands to sweat joints.

I read everything you come up with and like it. You make an interesting point about 'roundedness.'
However, the woman was a mess that only got bigger and caused more collateral damage as time went on. She hurt her mother deeply and almost killed her father, a truly Good man.
I can only speak to US treatment, but this is what it would look like, just for accuracy's sake..
In real life, if there is any such thing, there would have been serious repercussions after her stay in the hospital. Psych treatment would not have been optional, at least in the beginning. She was suicidal and needed treatment. Antidepressants, if they work, take a lot of time to work, plus talk therapy would be needed. She might have been involuntarily committed. She'd spend however much time at the Happy Place, until she was no longer suicidal (or insurance refused to pay further) or put on public assistance.
As for the ex-husband, he made a lot of possibly incorrect leaps of logic at once, putting himself in the crosshairs, by having to raise the baby and caretake the ex-wife. This 'man up' thing is sometimes destructive. Regardless, I admire that he was fiercely protective of his son, wife or no wife.
It's all imho. Again, I liked the story and look forward to reading what you write. Thanks for doing it.

Good story, but it does not really sound like the MC is finished growing up. That comment on revenge-killing at the end if it happened again was pretty out there for someone who admires his wife's father, understands some of his wife's problems, and has had some revenge on cheating wife and asshole friend.
I mean, separation and divorce (if they marry again) are still right there, in the law books....
It's a rather clunky tale of woe, way to telegraphed. Still its your offering so thanks for the read. ps by all accounts he is a cuck. All the strong language and violence cannot change that.
4* for the ending: "Besides, these are my characters, they'll do whatever I damned well tell them to."! You didn't let the ending open for someone else use your characters and finish the story! That is always sad! And even more sadder when people say how good a story without end was!
