She was beaten by a strong Czech player who like Anett had reached a career high ranking (CHR) of number two in the world as well as having won one grand slam title. So, there was no shame in losing to such a star player, and besides with that performance, it allowed Maia to rise in WTA ranking to No. 320 in the world.

With that result, Toomas Tamala was able to successfully lobby the tournament officials of the Indian Wells and the Miami tournaments to award Maia a wildcard entry to the qualifying rounds of their respective tournaments. The fact that Maia was an actual American citizen plus supported by the Estonian Tennis Association (Eesti Tennise Liit) was appealing enough for hardcore women's tennis fans to appreciate seeing her compete. Besides her CHR of No 320 plus the fact that she had won the Wimbledon Girls Singles title amply justified the inclusion of Maia for the qualifying rounds.

As noted, the Wimbledon tournament officials had been willing to bestow a wildcard entry directly to the main draw the previous year when she was eighteen years of age. Because she did not compete because of her illness, there was still interest in accommodating Maia the opportunity of allowing her to compete in the current year's tournament. However, because of her inactivity in WTA tournaments since winning the Girls Singles title, direct entry to the main draw could not be justified. With again Tamala's persistent advocacy on behalf of Maia, the Wimbledon tournament officials agreed to allow her entry to the qualifying rounds.

At the time Maia started her last year in high school, she had all but made her mind up to forego her ambition of competing full time on the WTA tour. However, with her success at the Tallinn tournament coupled with her permission to play in the American tournaments in March, plus the Wimbledon tournament, revived in her the desire to try and see how successful she might be as a professional tennis player. So, she decided that if she did well in these three tournaments, she would forego going to college for one year and see how well she could do in competing full time on the WTA tour.

In this latest consideration of her immediate future, Maia set new goals. Regarding the three tournaments she was slated to compete, she decided if she was successful enough as a result to raise her world rankings into the top 100, then she would postpone going to college for at least a year to compete full time on the WTA tour. If during that year she would raise her world ranking to the top 32, then she would continue playing tennis leaving her with the option to go to college once she decided to quit playing professional tennis for good.

The reasoning behind her decision was based on the structure of the WTA and the ITF in conducting the competition in the various tennis tournaments. When a player is ranked in the top 100, she receives automatic entry to the main draw of the four grand slam tournaments in tennis: the Australian Open (AO), held in Melbourne; the French Open (FO), held in Paris; Wimbledon, held in London and the United States Open (USO) held in New York City. If you are in the top 32, then you are seeded in the slam tournaments which guarantees that you won't meet another seeded player, who would naturally be considered a tougher opponent than an unseeded player, until the third round of the seven rounds of knockout elimination of the 128 competitors.

Additionally, if you are in the top 32, you are assured entry to any of the lesser WTA tournaments which one wishes to enter. If you are in the top 100 you will still gain entry into some of larger tournaments such as Indian Wells and Miami which each have fields of 96 competitors in the main draw. If in the tournaments with smaller fields of competitors if you do not gain direct entry, you will gain entry to the qualifying rounds. If you are not in the top 100, then you will not get entry even to the qualifying rounds of any of the WTA tournaments unless you receive a wildcard entry. So in that case, you have to resort to slugging it out by playing in the even lesser ITF tournaments which award lesser ranking points, so that it will take a longer time to reach the elusive top 100.

As noted, when Maia had turned eighteen, she had little contact with her coach Toomas Tamala, since the only tournament she participated in that year was the one in Tallinn in September. With her success at that tournament, and with Maia's new plans of perhaps playing full time on the WTA tour, Tamala agreed that he would oversee some of her practice sessions. In addition, he would accompany her to the American tournaments in March.

With this new arrangement with Tamala, it revived Maia's interest in having sex with him. The time spent in the American tournaments would be an ideal opportunity to have sex with him, since he would be coming alone without his wife and children. Accordingly, she vowed to herself, that if she did not have sex with him, it would not be because of any reticence on her part. He acquired a position with the Eesti Tennise Liit (Estonian Tennis Federation) to coach junior players who may become professionals. To augment the stipend, he received from the Eesti Tennise Liit, he was the tennis professional on call for the various tennis clubs in Tallinn. One of his greatest achievements in coaching was guiding Anett Kontaveit to her first ITF title being the Estonian Championship held in Tallinn, when she was fifteen years of age. Anett was the youngest player ever to win the title of this event. As Anett developed and improved significantly, she employed a variety of internationally proven tennis coaches when she joined the WTA tour full time. She was always grateful for Tamala's contribution to her success in professional tennis.

Tamala came into contact with Maia when she was fifteen, and he could see her potential. He had her registered in the ITF so that she could compete in the various Tournaments in Sweden, Finland, Latvia and in Estonia. Since Maia by the influence of her parents was unwilling to forego her high school education, her progress in her tennis development was hampered and so her results in the ITF tournaments were not encouraging. However, her runner-up result in the Junior Girls Singles at Wimbledon when she was sixteen and her championship title when she was seventeen drew some attention in tennis circles.

As we've seen, when Maia turned eighteen, she was still in her penultimate year in high school, so she did not commit to joining the WTA tour full time. And of course, there was the issue of her big boobs as a negative to dissuade her from contemplating a serious career in professional tennis. As a result, there was little contact between Maia and Tamala during that year. Tamala did oversee her practice sessions at the end of her Grade 11 academic year in anticipation of her main draw appearance at Wimbledon. Now there are five levels of competition in WTA tournaments listed as follows: (1) grand slams; (2) WTA 1000; (3) WTA 500; (4) WTA 250 and finally (5) WTA 125. The designated numbers roughly correspond to the number of ranking points a player is awarded for winning the tournament. The winner of a grand slam tournament is awarded 2,000 ranking points. In the ITF tournaments a few of the top tournaments do award 150 points to the winner which is still less than the 160 points awarded to the WTA 125 tournament winner. There are various levels of ITF tournaments with the lowest tournaments only awarding 10 ranking points to the winner, which was the same number of ranking points awarded to a player in the main draw of a grand slam but loses in the very first round.

Until recently there were no WTA level tournaments had been scheduled in Estonia. However, due in part to the success of Anett Kontaveit had achieved on the WTA tour, the Tallinn Open a WTA 250 event was initiated. Anett was runner-up in the initial Tallinn Open. And so, Maia had duplicated Anett's success.
