Vault Ch. 01

Names of Vault Residents:

- Mom: Sarah Johnson; 42 years old.

- Oldest Sister: Emily Johnson; 22 years old.

- Me (Second Oldest, male): Michael Johnson; 20 years old.

- Twin Sister: Lily Johnson; yeap, she's also 20 years old.

- Youngest Sister: Grace Johnson; 18 years old.

- Girlfriend: Nicole Daley; almost 19 years old.

Day 121:

Yeap, Nicole became my girlfriend. I was the only person she could talk to, so it was inevitable that she would fall for me. It was the same in my case. It's not like I had options either. Date my sisters, fuck what I'm even thinking. I mean Nicole could date one of my sisters. But lucky me, she's into men.

Let's get back to serious stuff. After the nuclear apocalypse I had been sending messages using Shortwave Radio. There were a few communication systems like Satellite; Lan, Radio but I used Shortwave Radio to keep my location hidden.

Shortwave radio transmissions can travel long distances and are less affected by atmospheric disturbances caused by nuclear explosions. If anyone still wants to detect my location then won't get an exact location except an area. In my area there are many bunkers so our location will be well hidden.

Okay, it's not like I became a pro in communication in 4 months. We all have been studying various things for a year since the nuclear threat started. It was a little easier for me because I started computer science or maybe because of Dad. Dad and I used to study together. Dad was in the military but he quit after Grace was born.

Uggh, I miss my dad. He's the reason that we're alive. Alright folks, let me share how our vault works, especially the food situation. We have rations which we can eat for 30 years to 50 years. But they will remain good for 20 to 25 years if our preservation system remains intact.

We farm here though. One of the easy ones is farming mushrooms. Mushrooms don't need sunlight, so they're perfect for bunkers. You gotta keep an eye on the temperature, though. If you're growing oyster mushrooms, you want it a bit warmer. But if you're growing wine cap mushrooms, they like it cooler. You can use insulation or maybe even a little heater or cooler if you've got one.

Humidity is super important for mushrooms. They like it really humid, like 80-90% humidity. You can spray water to keep it humid or use a machine called a humidifier. And don't forget about fresh air! Mushrooms need air to breathe, just like us. So, make sure your bunker has some ventilation, like little vents or a fan. There are a few more which we farm here to talk about but not today.

Ohh, yes the power. How we're handling the power situation. It's not good. Current technology sucks so no unlimited power source. Here's what we use keeping the lights on down here:

First off, we've got renewable energy sources. We use solar panels to soak up sunshine and turn it into electricity and store that energy in deep-cycle batteries for when we need it. But, they only last for a few years, so we've gotta be ready to replace them.

If things get really bad and our renewable energy isn't cutting it, we might need a backup plan. That's where a generator comes in handy. It runs on fuel so we only use the generator for emergencies. So far our solar panels are doing a wonderful job. Plus using energy-efficient stuff like LED lights and not wasting electricity on things we don't really need is helping to last our power storage.

Now, there's some really fancy stuff out there, like these things called Radioisotope Thermoelectric Generators, but they're super expensive. Still in development so yeah we're stuck to current known electricity sources. Only the government has access to them so maybe some of the bunkers have it. They are not unlimited power sources but they can last over a decade based on size. Though not easy to handle and keep the radiation control in case of some accidents.

But there is good news. Surface radiation levels started going down, like, really fast. Some scientists thought maybe big storms caused by the explosions helped clean up the radiation in the air. Others thought maybe the explosions messed with the Earth's magnetic field, and that somehow made the radiation go away. And get this - some people even thought tiny little bugs might've evolved super fast and ate up all the radiation! How crazy is that?

It was like a big hug from nature, saying, "Hey, don't worry, I gotcha!"

I couldn't believe it when I discovered it for myself. I read the radiation level everyday. It's automatic. I just give it a check which is also unnecessary. The program will alert if something changes. It was day 69 when I found this unbelievable reading. At first, I thought our monitoring program was malfunctioning, giving us false readings. I ran diagnostics, triple-checked everything I could, but the result remained the same. I communicated with others and it's the same everywhere. It took us one whole week to believe that the radiation levels were decreasing at an unprecedented rate.

Maybe, just maybe, I would live to see the day when the surface would be habitable for humans again, or at least my kids would. Our initial predictions had estimated it would take a couple of centuries at best for such a scenario to unfold.

Let's talk about sex now. Nicole and I have been having crazy sex for almost a month. Ohh shit, today will be our one month anniversary. Haha, why am I stressing over this? It's not like I have to take her somewhere special. Though I'll plan something smart to surprise her. How about a candle night dinner? Old school but easy to do here at least. Lily will help me with the setup. I don't know why but Lily seems very interested in my love life. She always asks stuff that brother-sister shouldn't share but due to that I'm the only person she considers as friend so I can't blame her for being creative sometimes. Let's share a sexy memory that you guys are waiting for. After the first night Nicole and I slept together, the morning was quite weird.

We allI gathered around the dining table. The aroma of freshly cooked food increased my hunger and I lost lots of calories last night. Nicole's legs were still recovering. We should have less sex in missionary. It was our first time so it'll be better next time. Maybe she was walking funny because it was her first time.

Mom served up plates of scrambled eggs, toast, and bacon with a side of canned fruit. Emily, my responsible older sister, helped set the table while exchanging playful glances with Lily. I knew why they were giving each other cheeky smiles.

Lily couldn't resist teasing me about the events of last night. Not that I was complaining. But I was worried about Nicole. I didn't like this teasing when I lost my virginity. No one knew about that but Lily somehow found out and brought it during breakfast in front of the whole family. Though one thing that didn't change was my little sister's confused face. It'll be hard for mom to teach her now in this situation. We all were expecting she would find out what was sex in highschool but it seems like she will remain virgin for her whole life. Emily is our big sis so she obviously did it and Lily shared with me when she lost her virginity. Sometimes I really get super confused. Do I treat her like a brother or she treats me like a sister?

"So, Mikey, how was your first night as a man?" Lily teased, her voice barely concealing her amusement.

Emily gave me a sly grin, she nudged me and winked, her eyes dancing with mischief. She was sitting next to me. When the fuck Emily got this open and being playful in front of Grace. I saw her being playful with Lily and I before but never in front of Grace or Mom. Yea, another person who spoiled Grace beside Dad.

I felt my cheeks flush with embarrassment, but I couldn't help but laugh along with the rest of my family. Then Grace couldn't resist joining in on the fun but I knew she was laughing to act that she understood that reference.

Nicole, my girlfriend, sat beside me, her cheeks tinted pink as she tried to hide her own laughter. She reached for my hand under the table, squeezing it gently in silent reassurance.

"Come on, Lily, give the poor guy a break," Emily chimed in with a playful smirk. "We all know he's head over heels for Nicole."

Lily's grin only widened at the mention of Nicole's name, and she leaned in closer, her voice dropping to a conspiratorial whisper. "Speaking of which, Mikey, did you remember to cover up that hickey on your neck this morning?" she teased, her eyes twinkling with mischief.

"Where?" I was starting to check my neck with my hands.

"Mom, what is hickey?" Grace asked.

"Lily, enough teasing," Emily interjected, trying to hide her amused expression behind a stern facade. Her eyes twinkled with amusement, betraying her attempt to maintain a serious tone. "It's nothing. It's just a kiss, Grace."

"Then why is it called hickey?" Grace asked.

"Good question, Grace. Remember what I taught you. You'll never learn if you don't ask questions," Lily said with a giggle.

"Mom, will you stop her now?" Emily said.

"Why are you blushing the most, Emily?" Mom chimed in with her usual dose of savage teasing. "Looks like it's not Nicole who lost her virginity. It's you!"

"Mom, what's virginity?" Grace asked.

"I thought you gave her the talk," I said.

"Yea, I give her that every day," Mom replied with a straight face.

"I mean sex...talk," I replied.

"Haha, never again. It was too much with Emily. I'm not gonna even try with Grace," Mom replied and got busy with her breakfast.

"Then who will teach me?" Grace pleaded, giving her mom her best puppy dog eyes.

"It's not a cookie, Grace," Mom replied.

"Don't worry, my little sis. I'll teach you everything you need to know," Lily said, gently patting Grace's head with a reassuring smile.

"No way I'm letting you spoil her like you," Emily retorted.

"I think we can skip the talk in Grace's case. It's not like she'll need it until we get out of this," I said.

"I'm with Mikey," Lily chimed in.

"Me too," Mom replied casually, though she was preoccupied with her food.

Before Emily could respond, Grace replied angrily, "You're gonna teach me, otherwise I'll become your nightmare, brother."

"It'll be the greatest show I ever watch," Lily replied with a loud laugh. "Bro, I'll give you one free-use ticket if you let me watch it."

"Deal," I smiled back at Lily.

"No, no deal. First explain what a free use ticket is?" Emily interjected with a hint of jealousy.

"Why? Are you jealous, Emily?" Mom asked, a teasing tone in her voice. "I thought you'd object to Michael giving her the talk."

"Jealous? Who, me? Haha, you guys have lost your minds. Must be the mushrooms," Emily retorted, quickly returning her focus to her food in an attempt to avoid the conversation.

"Jealous that Mikey and I are very close and you're not," Lily teased, poking fun at her sister with a playful smirk.

"Grow up. You two are twins," Lily replied.

I looked at Nicole and saw she was eating her food peacefully while enjoying our banter. Okay, at least they stopped talking about us.

"Are you guys using protection?" Mom asked. Nicole became drop dead silent after hearing that.

"Mom!" Emily exclaimed, her cheeks flushing with embarrassment at the blunt question.

"Mooom," I groaned, feeling equally embarrassed by the sudden turn in conversation.

Lily, ever the troublemaker, couldn't resist adding fuel to the fire. "Well, Mom, you know what they say about curiosity and cats," she teased, earning an exasperated sigh from both Emily and me.

Mom just chuckled, clearly unfazed by the discomfort she had caused. "I'm just making sure your brother is responsible, that's all," she said with a knowing smile.

"Btw, I know that rubber doesn't have a lifespan like humans do, so what's the long-term plan?" Lily said with a serious face.

"Good question. What's the long-term plan Michael?" Mom asked with a serious face too.

"Why are you all looking at me? Nicole, I thought you're on my side," I exclaimed, feeling a mix of amusement and pressure as everyone turned their attention to me for answers. Then I looked at Grace and I never saw her this confused. "Grace, just eat your breakfast." Sometimes I feel sorry for grace. She has no idea what's going on or she knows everything and pretends that she doesn't. If she really pretends then she's really good at it.

"We have pills here," Nicole replied nervously.

"Now you guys are happy?" I said with a touch of sarcasm.

I could write the sex part but we're not here to read about Nicole are we? Plus I can't just make the incest happen in a heart beat.
