"You are a dream come true, Emma," he whispered and kissed her blushing cheek.

Suddenly, Gabriel sensed pure rage rushing toward him from the left.

"Luther, stop Ivan," he commanded.

There was a rustling of leaves and panting as Luther restrained his twin less than three feet away from Gabriel. The ancient vampire slowly turned his condescending gaze to the left to observe his younger brothers. Ivan looked wild with rage as he held the bloody metal spike over his head. He had intended to drive it through Gabriel's neck before Luther grabbed him from behind and stopped him. Dried blood was on Ivan's throat, where Luther was forced to stab him earlier. The wound had already healed without a scar.

"Love can drive men crazy, vampires too. Little brother, I understand your irrational love for Emma, but if you try to attack me again. I will kill you," Gabriel warned.

Then he stood and made himself presentable before he knelt beside Emma and gathered her into his arms. Ivan glared at him the entire time, wishing he could stab his eyes and rip his head off, but he would never be that strong. Gabriel resisted smiling at him as he walked by him toward the mansion. Despite his cruelty, he knew when to quit.

"Cool your rage, Ivan, and come home with us. The experiment was a smashing success. She can maintain her power when she's scared witless. I'm confident she will be able to conjure it without the theatrics next time."

Ivan growled under his breath as he pulled away from Luther. He threw the bloody spike into the woods before he stalked after Gabriel. Luther sighed and followed after him.

"Gabriel, please stop for a moment," Ivan called in a civil tone.

Gabriel graciously obliged. He turned and met Ivan's gaze expectantly.

"May I please carry her to bed? You traumatized her enough for one evening. I doubt she'll be happy to see you when she wakes up. Unlike the rest of your family, she's not accustomed to your barbaric methods."

Gabriel thought for a moment and nodded.

"True. I could simply compel her to forget."

"Then she would also forget how she conjured her power."

Gabriel sighed and looked at Emma's beautiful face for a moment. Ivan made him realize how out of touch he was with humanity. Gabriel was perfectly comfortable with cruelty. He could barely remember a time when violence actually shocked him.

"I knew I kept you boys around for a reason. Here, take her to your room to rest. I know she's comfortable there."

Relief washed over Ivan as Gabriel gently placed Emma in his arms. He cradled her head to his neck and breathed in her familiar scent. It was comforting despite Gabriel's smell mingled in. Guilt washed over him a second later, knowing how scared Emma was when she thought Luther was killing him. He felt her terror through their bond. His rage towards Gabriel doubled at that point, but he was in no position to act on it. Luther sensed what his twin was feeling and put a hand on his shoulder, wishing he could do more to comfort him.

Gabriel was scowling at Ivan as he sensed his turbulent emotions. He rarely took the time to observe his brothers. He had a bad habit of thinking of them as servants instead of family. Emma was changing that. She was still in love with Ivan despite Gabriel's selfish attempt to override their bond, making Ivan his rival. Gabriel had to remind himself that he cared for Ivan too. Ivan, Luther, and Zaid were his chosen family that century. He fed them his blood to strengthen their connection. They vowed to protect each other like a real family would, and he was hurting that vow by grossly abusing his power over them.

"Ivan, I know my methods are barbaric. I humbly ask for your patients even though I don't deserve it. I will be kinder to Emma, for everyone's sake. Her appearance has awakened bad habits in me. I was out of line today."

Gabriel turned and continued toward the mansion as Ivan scowled at him.

"Wow, that almost sounded like an apology," Luther muttered.

Later that night...

Emma woke up with a gasp in Ivan's bed. It was dark outside the window. The overhead lights were dimmed but not off. The events of the day rushed back to her, and she suppressed an urge to scream. Ivan was dozing next to her. He sat up when he felt her terror. He quickly pulled Emma into his arms and held her. Her heart pounded as she trembled with anxiety.

"He made Luther stab you in the throat!" she stammered.

"Shhh, Emma. I'm fine. It hurt, but it didn't threaten my life. He was scaring you to bring out your power. I threatened him for it. He promised not to use violence again."

"And you believed him?"

"Yes. Gabriel is a monster, but he's smart enough to step back when he enrages his family. He doesn't want us to leave him. He doesn't realize he chased us out a long time ago. We only stay because we're scared of him. It's easy for an ancient vampire to track his chosen family. Our bond with him is similar to a subjugate bond, but he can't force us to love him. We're too smart for that."

"I'm sorry, Ivan," she whispered and snuggled her face against his chest.

His smell and touch were extremely comforting. She felt real love from him.

"Please don't apologize to me. I'm a monster too. You and the other subjugates are prisoners in this house because of us. I should have listened to my heart and protected you on Halloween, but I was too afraid to disobey Gabriel. I was also fighting my desire to taste you. You don't know how alluring you are," he whispered and breathed her in.

Ivan's delight made her smile despite her horrible day.

"Is Gabriel home right now? I don't sense him in the house."

"He went out drinking with Zaid and Luther an hour ago to celebrate your power and our new clients. He had the audacity to invite me too. It took everything I had not to tell him to go fuck himself with a cactus."

"Good, I need to try something while he's not close. Give me a minute to freshen up."

Ivan watched as she climbed off the bed and went to the bathroom. Her slender body, round breasts, perfect ass, and messy golden curls always encouraged him to stare. "Why did you collapse?"

"I'm exhausted. Using my power on Gabriel is like playing tug of war with a tornado."

"You should sleep then."

Ivan carried Emma back to bed and snuggled close to her under the blanket. He pulled her body tight against his, making her the little spoon. He seemed to always know exactly what she needed to feel safe and comfortable.

"Ivan, will our bond weaken because Gabriel made me taste his blood? He seems to think it will."

"I don't know. I hope not."

"Do you think your blood can strengthen me like it did the first time I tasted it?"

"I'm sure it can. You're more than welcome to it. I would have offered it sooner, but you almost vomited the last time you tasted it."

"I want to try again. It's worth it if it helps."

Ivan brought his left index finger to his mouth and used his fang to puncture it. Then he offered it to Emma. She took a deep breath and pulled it into her mouth. She sucked a small mouthful and struggled to swallow it. She gagged twice before she got it down. Ivan couldn't help chuckling at her determination. She breathed out and shuddered in revulsion, then her strength came flooding back. Healing warmth radiated throughout her body, followed by delicious arousal.
