I dreamt of home

I dreamt of home but different now it seemed,
the places changed as I searched to find my way
as if some giant hand had rearranged and schemed.

The quiet byeways where in former years I'd play
led not to orchards hatching apples on the bough,
but to a thicket still clothed heavily in sweet May.

Seagulls followed the awakened earth in plough
and though I walked towards the waiting sea
a bridge appeared to stem the neap tide now.

Around each corner there arose and baffled me
landscapes familiar, yet as if through driving rain,
blurred and indistinct till I could not see clearly.

I awoke to tears and in my heart a searing pain
knowing why only in dreams I pass that way again.
