A Second Chance

I didn't hear anything from Jaime that night or the next day. I guess she didn't go to work as I still had her keys. I was so miserable and I missed her so much it was overwhelming.

Suddenly, my phone dinged. I grabbed it frantically hoping it was Jaime, but it was Katie.

Katie: "So what happened? Did you find her? Did she understand? Are you ok?"

Me: " No. It's horrible. I think she broke up with me. She wouldn't listen to anything I was trying to tell her." I said sobbing my heart out.

Katie: "Stay there. I'm coming over."

It didn't take her long to get to my apartment. I drug myself from the couch still sobbing with tissue in hand and let her in. She took one look at me and gave me a big hug.

"I'm so sorry Barb. This is so crazy. I think I should have a talk with her. Just to let her know that you and I are not in and have never been in a relationship with one another. It's crazy for her to think that you are in love with me."

"No it's not. I think I've always been in love with you. That's the problem."

Katie just stared at me mouth open and said, "But not that kind of love...really?"

"Yes, Katie. I truly, truly love you and I can't hide my feelings any longer. It's obvious to everyone but you. I have ruined my life holding onto this stupid notion that you would some day be with me."

"But Barb, I'm not gay! I love you but like a sister. I don't want to sleep with you. I know you prefer women, but I didn't realize you were harboring those kinds of thoughts for me. I'm really sorry if I in any way led you on."

"No. It's not your fault. It's all my fault. Jaime has seen through my feelings and recognizes that I truly love you down to my soul. And now it has cost me her love. The one girl that I have really felt so strongly about in such a long time. My life is over.." I sobbed coming clean with my best friend for the first time ever.

"Well, we need to fix this. First of all stop saying you are in love with me. I mean I know you love me and all, but not in that way. I love Tommy and I'm getting married this Saturday to the man of my dreams. I want you in my life, but I don't want to make you uncomfortable being around us in the future," she said.

That was Katie. Trying to find a solution for everything. Unfortunately, this time I don't think there is a solution.

"All I know is that I want Jaime back. I want her to be my partner. I want to spend every night going to bed and every morning waking up with her."

"Then go to her and tell her that. Don't wait for her to answer the phone."

"I don't think she will believe me."

"Well, maybe she will believe ME. I'm going over there." With that she was gone. I was still moping on the couch blowing my nose and feeling sorry for myself that I had hurt Jaime so much.

Chapter 3 - Second Chances

I don't know what Katie must have said to Jaime that day when she stormed out of my apartment, but it worked. She must have convinced her that the feelings I had were purely one sided and that she didn't have any physical desire to be with me. That Thursday night before the Saturday wedding, I was sitting on my couch with a pint of ice cream in my lap when the doorbell rang. Thinking it was Katie or Amazon, I went to the door. It was Jaime. Holding a fresh bouquet of flowers and looking super gorgeous.

I was stunned. We didn't say anything to one another. She stepped into my apartment and we hugged and kissed eachother for the next fifteen minutes.

"I'm sorry," she said meekly, holding me around the waist and whispering in my ear.

"No, I'm sorry. I didn't mean to hurt you Jaime."

"I know that. I also know that there wasn't and isn't anything going on with you and Katie."

"You do??", I was kind of shocked that she said that.

"Yes, I do. And I believe in second chances. Lets move in together as I know this week without you has been hell. I don't want to spend another minute without you in my life."

I was so overwhelmed with what she had said, that I kissed her passionately, not letting her up for air. The bouquet of flowers once again hit the floor as we stepped over them and sat down on the couch.

From that moment on, we vowed not to mention the me loving Katie thing.

That Saturday was the wedding. I had to be there most of the day to have hair and makeup done, so Jaime came to the wedding venue quite some time later.

As I stood there on the alter, watching my best friend marry her best friend, I looked over at Jamie who was in the pew and smiled. I mouthed the words, "I love you", to her and she mouthed the words, " I love you too".

That was that. Katie was married to Tom and they would soon be on their way to spending the rest of their lives together. I danced many slow dances with Jaime and put all the attention on her and not the bride and groom.

"Lets go home", she whispered in my ear toward the end of the night.

When we arrived at her apartment she swooped me up at the doorstep and carried me to her bed. That night was very special as we made promises to eachother to always love and cherish what we had between us.

All I could think of was that I was one special girl to have Jaime love me the way she did. I spend every day adoring her and telling her how much I love her.

I'm just so glad she gave me a second chance!
