I know it’s realistic. I can remember when I was 23, happily married, but I had work colleagues that liked to play. Great, so far Alan has handled it perfectly. If they go to counseling this marriage can possibly be saved. But on the other hand he may not want the marriage to continue, so throwing her ass out was the right thing to do. It gives him and her time to think. There may be some men that tuned in to their wives. Very few. But it works for the story and given it is three parts, the circumstances of his discovery aren't going to be the focus.
This is real life. People cheat. They get excited, they get selfish, they don't think they will get caught, and they usually don't get caught. They get away with it because their spouse trusts them. It seemed a bit strange that the wife went after boy toy. A more realistic scenario would be that he flirts hard, and she doesn't shut him down. He keeps working her and over time she starts entertaining the fantasy until she gives in. Again, it could happen this way. Just seems a little less likely.
