"Mmmm, Because," Tom answered before I was able to, "if our footsteps are enough to cause a cave-in, Dan will see it first. It gives us a chance to run."

There were four tunnels that led away from the central room. One of them was the one through which we had entered. With our backs to that, the one to our right seemed to snake out for a much greater distance before ending in bright daylight, probably another bunker on a different part of the hill. The corridor was lined with doors and doorways, but it didn't look like there were any other big rooms along it. Under normal circumstances, that would have been the first I would have explored. Not only was it the easiest to assess from here, but it would offer another means of escape if the worst should happen.

But I wasn't looking for another means of escape; I was looking for the hospital. It was a coin toss between the other two. Both of them fell away into absolute darkness, they could have led only a few dozen yards, or they could have stretched out for miles. There was no way to know.
